Description |
This 18th-century artwork seems to depict a group of older, bearded alchemists working collaboratively in an underground laboratory. The one unbearded figure in the foreground could possibly be a woman. There is a furnace and assorted glassware and equipment used to prepare potions and distillates. This is one of a pair of gouache paintings dating from 1793, by the German artist Johann Jacob Hoch (1750-1829). See FA 2000.001.214. |
