Description |
Thomas Cooper was a noted jurist and chemist, and a good friend of Joseph Priestley. George III stands in profile to the left, nearsightedly examining an oval miniature of Oliver Cromwell by Samuel Cooper by the light of a candle held in his left hand. The candlestick is of massive plate holding a candle-end supported on a save-all. Contemporary events clearly suggest a second allusion to Thomas Cooper (1759-1839) who later lived with Priestley in Northumberland and was present at his death. This engraving was produced shortly after the French Revolution when King George III had grown unpopular. Gillray implies that history could repeat itself and the king could suffer the same fate as Charles I. |
