Description |
A: Refractometer Tripod base of instrument is cast iron with black finish; scale and readout arms are of brass, as are control knobs; on the base is a single-sided rectangular glass mirror which is mounted on an adjustable dovetail slide; a black-enameled brass pillar supports the prism alidade, the black brass cylindrical telescope viewer, and another viewer/magnifier which looks down at a scale on a nickel plate; telescope and prism can be moved together on a pivot; prism alidade can also be moved with a wheel toward the top of the refractometer. B: Box/Carrying Case Rectangular mahogany-stained hardwood case; top has a black enamel-coated metal holder; box opens from the front with a small circular keyhole in the middle left; inside of box door has two brackets/holders, one presumably for a thermometer; inside of box has a larger bracket and a platform on the box bottom to secure refractometer. C: Key Small (brass?) key with a newer-looking key ring. D: Glass Test-Block and Ivorine Case Small circular white ivorine case with a removable lid; small rectangular glass test-block is inside. E: Cardboard Holder Cylindrical black cardboard holder that comes apart at the middle; holder is possibly for a thermometer. |
