Description |
In the center of a large room, a surgeon in a red cap and apron kneels to apply a leech to the foot of his bearded patient. Scenes of bloodletting and leechcraft are common in such images of doctors' surgeries. The patient's wife looks on with concern. Earthenware jars holding medicines and oils are arranged on the floor, along with small tools for cutting, and copper basins. At right, the surgeon's young apprentice works over a small three-legged pot. A portable furnace sits at right. |
