Description |
The walls of this busy and productive apothecary's shop are lined with glass vessels and earthenware jars used for the preparation and storage of drugs, tonics and purgatives. The apothecary sits at his desk, conversing with a young assistant in front of a cabinet of "simples" or prepared medicines. On the floor at left, women kneel to pick and sift through bundled herbs and plants. A row of distillation vessels sit above a fire at left, tended by a boy in a cap and apron. Through the large vaulted door, two women can be seen conversing in front of a landscape of trees. |
