Description |
Michel-Ferdinand d'Ailly, the Duke of Picquigny comissioned the well-known Parisian architectural painter, Jacques de la Joue, to paint thirteen paintings for his natural history cabinet in the rue du Bac. The over-doorway paintings depicted allegories of the arts and sciences. They are known today through Charles Nicholas Cochin's engravings of the series of allegories. La Pharmacie features an alchemist seated in his workshop. It is a highly inventive scene featuring a large furnace at center, taxidermied animals hanging from or at the ceiling (an alligator, armadillo, elephant head, rhinoceros head, shark head, fishes, and large spider), shelves of books, and laboratory equipment. |
