Description |
This busy and productive workshop centers on the figure of a surgeon, who kneels to tend to the foot of his elderly patient. He may be bleeding his patient with leeches, a common sight in images of doctors' surgeries. The patient's wife looks on with concern. A second female figure- likely the surgeon's wife, or a housemaid- looks over her shoulder at the scene. Earthenware jars holding medicines and oils are arranged on the floor, along with small tools for cutting and glass jars. At right, the surgeon's young apprentice prepares a mixture or salve in a bowl. Far in the background, a second vignette shows a dentist pulling a tooth. |
