"Ascension du "Pole Nord," La sieste sons la nacelle, 28 Juin 1869" A graphite drawing on paper, with highlights in white tempera. The scene shows nine men and one woman, relaxing in the shade of a hot-air balloon gondola. The balloons was the "Pole Nord," (North Pole) and the artist was himself a balloon enthusiast and pilot. The drawing is noted as recording a flight undertaken on June 28, 1869. The drawing has been matted, along with a engraving/etching showing a ballon flight, and a paper label about the artist. Albert Tissandier (1839-1906) was a French architect, aviator, illustrator, editor and archaeologist. With his brother, Gaston Tissandier, he produced the French scientific journal "La Nature," an early magazine dedicated to the popularization of science. Alongside their experiments and adventures in hot-air ballooning, the brothers Tissandier demonstrated the first electric-powered flight of an early airship at an exposition in 1881, combining an electric motor with a dirigible. |
