Description |
This engraving by J. Tardieu reproduces a painting of the same subject by David Teniers II. A bearded physician examines a flask of urine as his patient, a middle-aged woman, looks on thoughtfully. Before him is an open book, likely a medical text on diagnosis and treatment. His desk also holds an ink-well and hourglass. On the floor, stoppered bottles and earthenware apothecary jars hold prepared medicines and tonics. In the background, the physician's assistants grind herbs or other organic materials in a mortar and pestle. |
