Statue of Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) is a reproduction modeled after the original, which was sculpted by Francis John Williamson in 1874. Located in Birmingham, U.K., the original statue was erected to mark the 100th anniversary of Priestley's discovery of dephlogisticated air (oxygen). Williamson recreated the scene of Priestley discovering oxygen. Priestley is seen standing next to a pedestal holding a glass tube dipped in a vessel containing mercury while holding a burning lens in his right hand. |
