"t was purchased for me when I swam on UPenn's varsity team in early 2006. I'm sure they bought it directly through Speedo. The suits were so expensive and the benefits of the suit didn't last that long, so they were reserved only for championships. I also think only swimming in these suits in championships gave you a mental boost too. I only swam in the 2006 Ivy League Championships my freshman year (during the 2006 summer I was injured and had surgery, so I didn't swim after that). The races were the 500, 1000, and 1650 freestyle. I know the 500 had a preliminary heat and a final heat, and the 1650 only had a final heat, but I don't remember if the 1000 had a prelim and final heat. So I probably wore it in less than 5 races in total, plus during some warmups before the races and probably a practice or two before the championships to test the suit. The championships that year were at Harvard. From what I remember, the suit was just so tight, and not very stretchy and absorbent, that it really "sucked you in" and made you feel faster and lighter. Speedo made ones with full arms and full legs, but I never liked those. I know a lot of sprinters used the ones with full arms and full legs because their races weren't that long. I don't think USA Swimming allows the full suits anymore." - Theresa Altieri Taplin, Dec. 5, 2017 |
