Description |
"A Birmingham Toast, as given on the 14th of July, by the ____________ Revolution Society; 23 July 1791" Six Men around a table celebrate the second anniversary of the fall of the Bastille. Priestley standing on the left holds up an empty Communion dish and a brimming chalice and calls for "the ____ (Kings) Head, Here!" Charles James Fox and Richard Brinsley Sheridan second his sentiments. Horne Tooke and Theophilus Lindsey are also present. such a dinner did of course take place in Birmingham (and elsewhere) but Priestley, perhaps forewarned, was not in attendance. That night his house at Fair Hill was attacked and burned by the Church and King rioters. |
