Description |
A bald-headed alchemist peers through his spectacles at the heated crucible which his assistant holds up. A second crucible and a larger experiment sit on the fire at left. On the floor sits a hand-bellows, as well as some pieces of firewood and a set of tattered books. Shelves of jars and vials line the back wall, and a paper print has been pinned up. A second assistant enters the humble workshop through a door at right. |

[1] (sale, Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 7 May, 1993, lot 89 (to Roy Eddleman for Spectrum). Spectrum Laboratories, Rancho Dominguez, CA, 1993-2000, acquired by Roy Eddleman. The Chemical Heritage Foundation, 2000 (from Spectrum and Roy Eddleman). Notes: [1] According to typed notes on the back of both pendant paintings: "The picture was taken to the chief conservator Dr. P. Eikemeier, in the period from May 23, 1978 to May 30, 1978, and inspected at the Bayer. Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Dir. U. Doenerinstitute), 8 Munich 2, Meiserstraße 10. According to Dr. Eikemeier, this picture is of excellent quality and should have been painted in the first half of the 18th century, around 1740. The name of the master is unknown; Probably Flemish or Dutch. The work is neither a fake nor a copy, but an excellent composition according to the manner of the Flemish painter Teniers, David, born 1610 in a Anvers, died on 25 April 1690. 1610 in a Anvers, gest. am 25 April 1690. München, den 1 Juni 1978 [signature] Kurt Aubele" |
