Description |
Michel-Ferdinand d'Ailly, the Duke of Picquigny comissioned the well-known Parisian architectural painter, Jacques de la Joue, to paint thirteen paintings for his natural history cabinet in the rue du Bac. The over-doorway paintings depicted allegories of the arts and sciences. They are known today through Charles Nicholas Cochin's engravings of the series of allegories. L'Historie depicts a partially nude winged male figure, several putti behind him, while eight young boys walk towards a shining rotunda on a hill in the background. An hour glass sits in the foreground. |
