Description |
This painting on copper is a copy based on David Teniers II's The Alchemist's Laboratory, also in this collection (FA 2000.003.023). A bearded alchemist in a pale blue coat pauses in his work, holding a pair of hand bellows as he controls the heat under a small crucible placed on the furnace. The scene depicts a diverse range of alchemical pursuits: medical, metallurgical, and experimental. The workshop is a large one and appears to be prosperous and busy. The transparency of the scene is the result of an aggresive pastcleaning of the painting, which reveals the earthtones used to block in the composition beneath the final paint layer. |
