This black and white painting shows an extreme close-up of a chemist staring at chemical glassware. This painting was commissioned by the Imperial Chemial Industries as part of an initiative headed by the company's public relations authority, Sidney Rogerson, who designed the campaign to convey the prestige as well as the utility of British science to domestic and foreign audiences. |

Armstrong was commissioned by Imperial Chemial Industries as part of an initiative headed by the company's public relations authority, Sidney Rogerson. It was one of 85 pieces exhibited in 1946 art show "Portraits of an Industry: Exhibition of Pictures depicting the Personnel, Aspects and Services of British Chemical Industry." |
