Provenance |
These instruments were purchased with funds from a National Science Foundation grant (Ramon M. Barnes, principle investigator) to the University of Massachusetts Amherst. They were used for years in an undergraduate instrumental analysis course (Chem 513) and graduate spectrochemical analysis course (Chem 715) for experiments with atomic flame spectrometry, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, UV/Vis spectrophotometry, and other special projects. Some instrument components were used in graduate research projects directed by Professor Barnes. The equipment was purchased from the University of Massachusetts by ICP Information Newsletter, Inc. in 2000 when Professor Barnes retired and established the University Research Institute for Analytical Chemistry (URIAC) in Amherst, MA. These units were originally designed by Dr. Ray Vogel in cooperation with Professor Howard V. Malmstadt (University of Illionois, Urbana-Champaign) and Professor John Walters (University of Wisconsin and then St. Olaf's University) in a Heath spectroscopy development laboratory located in Urbana.
